Affiliate Blogging – a potent recipe for Online Business Success
“You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” – Zig Ziglar
Affiliate blogging is all about helping others get what they want. Done correctly, it is a win-win all around.
The merchant wins because their product or service gets sold. You win because you get a commission. Your blog visitor wins because you have just helped them find a product or service that is right for them.
It doesn’t cost your blog visitor anything extra to buy from your affiliate link. The merchant pays your commission, not the buyer.
In fact, I have had lots of people ask for my affiliate link for things because they want to make sure I get a commission.
It is a way for people to show their appreciation for the work you put into helping them out.
What should your blog be about?
Your blog will be related to one of your preferred niche markets with profit potential (what you came up with in the previous lessons). See the links to previous lessons at the bottom of this page (in case you have not yet decided on your first niche market).
After your blog is setup and attracting visitors, join affiliate programs that have products or services that would be of interest to those visitors. Add the affiliate banners or links they provide you with to your blog.
That is where most people get started. By following along with the suggestions in this mini-course, you will learn more advanced strategies also.
Why is Affiliate Blogging a Potent Combination?
- Easy to get started.
- You don’t need a product of your own to sell.
- You just blog about things you are interested in.
- Blogging attracts visitors from the free Google search results.
- It is all automated. The merchant manages the entire sales process, tracks your sales, and pays your commissions at regular intervals (no invoicing required).
- The process is repeatable. You can generate multiple streams of passive income.
How do you Get Started?
To get started, just create a WordPress blog and start blogging! I will show you shortly how easy this is to do (with a short video I created for you).
Why is WordPress the preferred affiliate blogging platform? WordPress can be installed on your own domain (e.g. yoursite.com). It is both free and “open source”.
So developers all over the world create free plugins and themes that can be added to WordPress. Many of these are designed to make affiliate blogging easier.
As a result, it has been estimated that over 18% of all websites (of any kind) on the internet are powered by WordPress.
With such a large community working hard to create free plugins and themes that make your life easier, it would be very hard to justify going any other way.
Of course there are also “premium” plugins and themes that cost something. However, you will be surprised at the many choices and high quality of the free ones.
What’s in a Theme?
The look and feel of a WordPress site is based on “themes”. By applying a different theme to your site, you can completely change how it looks in a matter of minutes.
So when talking about WordPress, the line between blog and website is totally erased. You can make a WordPress site look like a traditional blog, or any other style of website.
For example, this page you are reading right now is on a WordPress site that I own. It uses a free WordPress theme. My author website uses a completely different WordPress theme. As you can see, it has a different look and feel.
Create your first WordPress blog (in minutes)
Click here for a video I created that shows you how to create a WordPress blog in just a few minutes. The video is on the homepage of the WordPress blog I created within the video.
In the video you will see that you basically just give your blog a name, and choose a free theme. The Wealthy Affiliate Platform takes care of all the WordPress installation details.
I have mentioned Wealthy Affiliate numerous times in this course. That’s because it offers so much for free that anyone can absolutely give Affiliate blogging a try at zero cost, to see if it is something you would enjoy doing.
That’s why Wealthy Affiliate is my main recommendation for readers of my book, to make what I teach in the book a practical reality.
So the best first step in my opinion is to join Wealthy Affiliate. Create your first WordPress blog there and begin their Getting Started training to learn how to improve your blog and make money from it as an Affiliate.
How do you “Own your Blog”?
To own a blog/website and online business means you have the domain (URL) registered in your name (e.g. yoursite.com).
You can register a domain at Wealthy Affiliate, or in other places like Namecheap or Godaddy. You can build and host your blog at Wealthy Affiliate no matter where you register your domain name.
Every registrar has a website where you can log in and point your domains to whatever hosting service you choose (e.g. Wealthy Affiliate).
You don’t own the free blogs offered at Wealthy Affiliate. The free blogs are actually subdomains of a domain owned by Wealthy Affiliate (e.g. yoursite.siterubix.com).
Nobody can offer free websites on unique domains because it costs around $10 or $15 per year to register a domain. To have a real online business that you own, you will want to have your domain registered in your name (e.g. yoursite.com).
So the free Wealthy Affiliate blogs should be seen for what they are, a way to try out Affiliate Blogging for free.
When the time comes that you want to own your website, Wealthy Affiliate makes it easy to transfer your free siterubix site to your own domain.
It’s essentially a one click process to transfer your siterubix site to your new domain. (Or you can just start from scratch with your new domain if you prefer).
Before you can do this, you have to upgrade to Wealthy Affiliate Premium. Then you can host up to 25 websites at WA using domains you own.
If that sounds complicated, the training (and support staff if needed) at Wealthy Affiliate will show you how.
The starting point is just to join for free and try things out to see if this is something you would enjoy doing. To start with, they give you 7 days to experience many of the Premium features.
For me there is so much value in the Wealthy Affiliate Premium membership that I consider it just a cost of doing business.
If you do decide to go Premium in the first 7 days, it is $19 for the first month, and $49/month after that. You can decrease your effective monthly cost if you pay for a year in advance, which is $495.
You essentially get 2 months for free if you pay yearly. They also throw in a free .com domain name and $50 in community credits when you go yearly.
The decision to go to Premium is completely in your hands. They don’t take your credit card info when you join for free.
That means there is no automatic upgrade after a certain period of time. If you decide not to upgrade, you retain access to the free features for as long as you like.
